Having originally having 4 teams signed up to participate only two teams showed up on the actual afternoon. So it was head to head for 18 holes. Two turf grass management majors were the eventual winners, shooting a 74 on the day. Kenneth Ray and Chris Pitts had lost out by 1 stroke the previous year but this time came out on top to earn a place in the national tournament.

Baker/Ridings win NC State national qualifier, earn trip to Las Vegas
Brooke Baker and Caleb Ridings led the field by carding a seven -under par score of 65 to win the Student Division at the 2011 National Collegiate Golf Championship (NCGC) local qualifier tournament held at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday.
As first-time NCGC participants, Baker and Ridings, students at NC State University, were ecstatic with the win and earning the opportunity to travel to and compete in the upcoming 2011 NCGC tournament hosted by the Collegiate Golf Alliance (CGA) at Paiute Golf Club in Las Vegas, N.V.
Video: Baker/Ridings talk about their winning round of play
Fellow NC State students, identical twins Nick and Anthony Capra finished a stroke behind at -6 (66) in second place and representatives from the University of Richmond, Navid Abbaei and Carlos Furlotti, claimed third place finishing at -5 (67).
In the Open Division, all three competing teams were father-son tandems who all finished within a stroke of one another in claiming a spot in the division’s final placements.
Robert Wayland and father Rob took first place with a score of 76 (+4) followed by Jeffrey Loken and father Jeff carding a 77 (+5) and Brandon Loughren and father Bill earning third place finishing with a score of 78 (+6).

1st Place - Mark Mathieu and Will Livingston
October 7, 2011
Due to a bank's decision to close down Hampden Country Club four days before our event we were left scrambling around to find a new host course. Oak Ridge Country Club in Feeding Hills came through. The challenging course, played form the gold tips to simulate the extreme distances of the Paiute course.
Complete with shotgun start, long drive and closest to the pin challenges the day a success and we are looking forward to hosting again next fall. Mark Mathieu and Will Livingston won the student division by two strokes over a Springfield College team and by four strokes over an Ithaca College team.

On Friday, September 30th, on a beautiful day in Northern California, Sonoma State University held it's 2nd annual SSU Intramural Golf Tournament. The turnout was low, but the spirits were high among the competitors. With a 12pm tee time, some compeitiors showed up before 10am to prepare while others straggled in around 11:45, barely making the mandatory check in meeting. Those who came early were able to compete in the chipping and putting challenges put on by our Intramural staff. Others were able to shoot a 30 second video to tell Dr. Pepper why they deserve free tuition and have a chance to win up to $123,000!
We set the tees for the tips and the roughly 6500 yard course served as our battle ground. As the tournament got under way 2 teams were -4 through 6 holes. Students, Staff, Alumni, and Community Members were all represented in our tournament. After 13 holes, there was 1 group pulling away with a 4 stroke lead. It was their tournament to win or lose.
James Matthews and Brennen Ramey (Alumni/Community division) won the tournament with -11 (60). The top student score was turned in by Michael McGee and William Thiersch with -6 (65). The top faculty/staff score was Mike and David Dominguez with -2 (69). After the tournament, the players enjoyed a wonderful BBQ dinner followed by prizes for the putting and chipping contest along with 2 longest drive holes and 2 closest to the pin awards. Overall the tournament was a great success and the participants thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Matt Anderson and Steve Spellman, who lost last years tournament in a tie-breaker said, "We wanted to go to Vegas so bad and win the tournament. We might go anyway because of the experience we've had with the CGA and the SSU tournament." Personally, I hope we can get a few players to Vegas to defend our National Championship and really put Sonoma State on the map!

On September 25th, the Intramural Sports program held their yearly golf tournament. The tournament consisted of 14 individual participants divided up into 7 teams. We had 6 teams that were students and 1 team that was faculty staff. The tournament was set up as a two person best shot shotgun start at 9:00 A.M. The day went along very well with the weather being a little chilly and cloudy in the morning, but as the day went on the temperature warmed up and the clouds broke up. Throughout the course, we held individual hole contests. On hole number 5, we had the Men’s long drive contest which was won by Joe Jensen. Hole 18 had the Longest Putt Made and the winner was Reid Turner.
On hole 8, we held our coke chipping contest which challenged participants to chip a ball into a net to win a free bottle of Coca-Cola or Coca-Cola product. We had a total of 3 winners from the chipping contest. Following the tournament, we provided Hot Dogs and BBQ pork for all the participants. After lunch we raffled off additional prizes. The prizes varied from a sleeve of golf balls and Nike Golf Hats. The winners of the student division were Matt Morse and Chris Foster with a score of 66. The winners of the Faculty Staff division were Tommy Schorer and Mike Widen with a score of 70. The winners of the student division are given airfare and an invitation to the CGA national tournament in Las Vegas. The tournament was enjoyed by all the participants and thanks to our sponsors we were able to provide all of them with different prizes.

1st Place - Murow Aaron and John Humphries
KU Golf Club hosted its second annual local qualifier for the National Collegiate Golf Championships. Six teams came to compete for one spot, sponsored by the KU Golf Club, to attend the NCGC in Las Vegas, Nev. The tournament was at Alvamar Country Club on their private course. Most university students only play the public side, but the private course was much more tight, with narrow fairways and small, fast greens.
The participants couldn’t have asked for nicer weather. Light winds and clear blue skies made for a perfect golf day. Most of the participants are a part of the KU Golf Club Team, but with an unfamiliar course, scores were very mediocre. Our winners, John Humphries and Aaron Murow, shot a 71 (one-under par). Also in their group, Nick Defrancesco and Chance Clark, shot one-over par to place second. We are excited to send John Humphries and Aaron Murow to the national tournament in Las Vegas.

Western Kentucky University hosted the 3rd annual CGA Qualifier Tournament on October 1, 2011 at Park Mammoth Cave Valley Golf Course in Park City, Kentucky.
On September 22, 2011 WKU hosted the CGA Expo to make students aware of the 3rd annual CGA Qualifier. We set up on WKU’s South Lawn from 10:00am-3:00pm to draw student interest to the event and to promote the joys of golf to the diverse campus population. Mr. Jeff McGill. PGA instructor assisted with the event by offering on site lessons and instruction to the students who showed up to hit golf balls. He spent considerable time with students assisting them with their swing and to give them other pointers. The expo was a great success and many students participated in golf for the first time ever! Estimates were made of over 700 students showing up to participate in the 5 hour event.
We continued to focus on the tournament and prepare for the event. We had 18 students register and participate in the event on October 1, 2011 held at Park Mammoth Cave Valley Golf Course. All students received a registration tee bag for participating in our event. The tournament was a shotgun start that began at 9:00am at a brisk low 60 degrees throughout the morning. Most players finished playing by around 1 pm. Score cards were gathered and announcements made of first, second and third place standing. Joseph Stumph and Taylor Richard (placed First), Brent Smith and Nathan Smith (placed Second) and Austin Meredith and Craig Cassady (placed Third). All players received participation gifts to end our event.
Several sponsors donated product or cash that assisted with the success of the tournament. We wish to extend a tremendous thanks to the staff at Cave Valley Golf Course and Park Mammoth Resort. The extra attention they provided to the event added to the experience the students had.
