The local qualifier for Texas Tech consisted of 38 teams and 18 holes out at Reese Golf Course. It was a eight hour long tournament that resulted with the two winning teams playing in a sudden death match. The winner got a birdie while the loser got a par for the course. However, all three winners were very excited to get to go to Vegas and not only represent their school but also represent their Fraternity. Tech fraternities do a lot for our community and they were excited about being able to go play and represent what all they do for the community and Texas Tech itself. The tournament was fun and exciting especially the sudden death match and consisted of people playing for the Vegas tournament but at the same time going out and just having fun.

Chase Barbier and Tyson Bickford shot a 62 to edge out last years champions, Timothy Johnson and Dan Fossey, by one shot in the Student Divsion. Arnie White and John Pedicone represented the University of Arizona Faculty and Staff well by shooting an even par 70. The tournament took place on the 6,936 yard par 70 Silverbell Golf Course layout.
Chase Barbier and Tyson Bickford are looking forward to representing UA at the National Collegiate Golf Championship. "Vegas is going to be great, and going there to represent UA on the national level will be an awesome experience" said Tyson. Chase's excitement about winning the tournament was summed up in one statement: "Vegas baby!". Chase and Tyson got hot on the back nine, mainly due to Chase's consistent 350 yard drives.

The University of Miami hosted its 2009 Local Qualifier at Miami Springs Golf Club in Miami, FL on Friday, October 2nd. The field was filled with mostly student competitors eager to win contests and ultimately the trip to Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a warm morning with clear skies as everyone teed off. By the 9th hole, it began to rain heavy as it is the raining season for South Florida this time of year.
The course became unplayable after 9 holes as the course was submerged under water and there were no signs of the rain lightning up. Tom Soria, the Assistant Director of Intramurals and Special Events decided to take the top teams and give them a rain check to play 18-holes the following week. The top 5 teams made the cut as the scores ranged from -1 under par to -3 under par.
As they played 2 teams emerged to the top, as the front runners, Davis Adams/Dan Brookman, Andrew Gall/Scott Woolf. Adams/Brookman never lost control of the lead at the turn as they were at -3 under at the turn and Gall/Woolf were at -1 under. Adams/Brookman birdied the 13th-hole par 5 to go -4 under and pared out to win the tournament. Ironically, both teammates, Adams and Brookman made 5 consecutive putts in the putting contest before the tournament began.

The University of Oregon for the 2nd year in a row hosted the NCGC Local Qualifier on Sunday, October 18th, 2009 at Springfield Country Club. You could not have asked for a better Fall day. The rain stopped the day before the event and we experience some fabulous conditions with sunshine and temps in the upper 60’s. Not bad for Oregon this time of the year! Participants showed up enthusiastic and ready to play. The competition was fierce in both the Faculty/Staff division and the Student division. Central Oregon Community College’s Ricky Virk a previous National Champion and his partner David Green came out on top with a score of 65, not too far behind was David Mattie and Josh Weston who came in with a 66 also from COCC; following them in 3rd was Dennis Munroe and Greg Smith from the UO scoring a 73. Even though Dennis and Greg came in third Dennis was very excited with the Eagle shot that dropped on the 18th hole. “It was unbelievable!”
In the student division we also had a fierce battle; UO students Matt Montpas and his partner Ryan Marx came in first with a score of 64; following them was Brandon Sams and Michael van Bronkhorst also from the UO shooting a 65. They couldn’t believe that they bogeyed the last hole. That dropped them out of a tie for first. They were disappointed to say the least. Three teams shot a 67 for third place but UO student’s Richard Fout and Peter Maita claimed the spot on a hole count back. Birdying the last hole was huge for them! All the golfers had a great day and were extremely grateful to the sponsors; Matrix who sponsored the lunch; FRS who provided the “Energy” drink and chew samples; Golfsmith for providing the $10 gift cards and Almost Golf and Nike for providing prizes. That’s a wrap until the next tournament!
