It took 21 holes, and seven hours to determine a champion at the Connecticut Intramural Golf Championships hosted by Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University at D. Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course. In near total darkness and with rain drops beginning to fall, Paul Chianese and Mike Van Praag conceded a tap in birdie to AJ Restanino and Pat Scanlan to end the sudden death playoff. Three teams – Chianese/Van Praag, Restanino/Scanlan, and Chirs Andrews and Robert Taraloo all ended the day with 2 under 70s.
The three teams moved from the Red Course (tournament course) to the Black Course to play holes 1, 6 and 9. After a wayward second shot, AJ Restanino hit an amazing 50 yard, through the tree recovery to with three feet of the hole, to help his team save par, and continue the playoff. Andrews and Taraloo bowed out on the 6th missing a five foot for par. Earlier Chianese and Van Praag both missed 10 foot birdie attempts to win the championship. On to the ninth tee, where Pat Scanlan’s monster drive put his team in a commanding position, the tournament ended. Restanino again hit an amazing shot sending a 4 iron through the darkness to find the ball, 20 feet away – pin high for eagle. The tournament featured 12 teams playing scratch golf from the back tees. Final scores ranged from 70 to 88.
