The National Collegiate Golf Championship made its first stop in Tempe this weekend at the beautiful ASU Karsten Golf Course. On a gorgeous day in Arizona, twenty students competed in this local qualifier for the right to compete in the National Tournament in Las Vegas on November 11-12. Finishing with a -6 (66) the team of Andrew Frederick and Mike Lyons claimed 1st Place and the paid entry into the National Tournament. Qualifying for the tournament were the 2nd Place team of Aaron Piercy and Eric Berryman with a -3 (69) and the 3rd place finishers Jason Badarello and Tyler Valdivia also with a -3 (69). Piercy and Berryman won the 2nd place spot over Badarello and Valdivia with a birdie on the very tough #4 hole, the #1 handicap hole on the course. Way to go guys.
Badarello claimed two of the hole prizes with the longest drive on #14 and the longest putt on #9. Lyons claimed a closest to the pin on #7 and Kyle Hickman claimed the closest to the pin on a tough placement on hole #12.
Congratulations to all the winners. Everyone who participated raved about the tournament format and were excited to compete again in the future. Summary
Our tournament, while having significantly less number of participants then we wanted, is to be considered a success. We had great weather and everyone seemed to really enjoy the format and tournament. We only had 15 participants, but with this being a first time ever tournament and lack of time to adequately prepare and advertise, I definitely think this is something we can improve upon for next year. Out of our 15 participants, 13 of them were students. We combined divisions and had our winner come out as the only community/alumni team.

Summary
After cancelling the tournament due to 10 inches of rain on October 1, the CGA Qualifier hosted by Loyola College (MD) finally took place on October 29 in extremely frigid conditions. Eleven student teams and seven faculty/staff/community teams participated in the event, outlasting the harsh winds, sub-43 degree temps, and soggy conditions. The team of Frank Messina and Andrew Gendreau, who traveled over two hours to participate in the tournament, won the overall title with an even-par 70. Messina also took home Closest to the Pin Honors, after snuggling his tee shot to within 7 feet on the par-3 fifth hole. Pat Fisher and Peter Hinkey fired a 1-over par 71 to tie for second place, along with alumni Eamonn Golden and Dan McCartin. Todd Nicholas Rosato and Tournament Director Eric Eckenrode took 2nd in the Open Division with a gutsy 3-over par 73. Afterwards, Rosato noted, “It was cold. It was tough. But after finishing the round with a little Beefaroni in a bread bowl, I can't wait until next year.”
Gregg Zavadsky, the “Human Pie Chart,” bamboozled a 312-yard drive to take home Longest Drive Honors.
Alumni favorites, Geoff Norbert and Grady Sheffield, limped to a 13-over par 83. Afterwards, both seemed flabbergasted. Said Sheffield, “I can't believe the conditions. I've played Pebble Beach and it was easier than this.” Norbert concurred, “The old par-3 course in my hometown has a windmill and everything. I love alternate forms of energy.”
Everyone enjoyed the tournament and is looking forward to next year.

Summary
On yet another picture perfect Southern California day, The Trojan Golf Club hosted the Scramble to Vegas NCGC Local Qualifier at Los Verdes Golf Course. The Pacific Ocean views and temperatures in the 70's highlighted the day for 25 teams of students, faculty/staff and Alumni/community golfers. The tricky ocean putts and long rough were a challenge for many. Two students teams were head and shoulders above the field as Mick Eddy and Oliver Vereschagin battled head to head Edward Francis and Kevin Yee the entire 18 holes. Francis and Yee had teamed up before during the USC Ironman Triathlon in Palm Springs and their experience of playing together was the key factor in beating Eddy and Vereschagin by a stroke carding a 10 under 62. They will represent USC in the National Championship In Las Vegas November 11-13, 2005.
In the Non-Student division, another close match was developing when Rick Turner and Ron Wainwright were one of the first team in the clubhouse with an impressive score of 6 under 66. Their score held up through the day until there was only team left on the course. When Rick Savage and Merrill Barr came, all eyes were on the signing of the card as they posted a 8 under 64 for the victory.
In all there were 10 student teams, 5 Faculty/Staff teams and 9 alumni/community teams. Special contests were won by a combination of students and non-students

Of the 58 students, 57 of them were UW-Madison students with one driving over from UW-Milwaukee. The winning twosome shot a nine under par, 63, on one of Madison 's toughest courses: University Ridge. Amadio & Frerichs not only shot a 63 , but they were four under on the last five holes thus also winning the Red Bull Final 5 . They chose to accept the Red Bull Final 5 package allowing the second place overall finisher Bartmann & Jayne a trip to Vegas for the lowest score. Bartmann & Jayne shot a 7 under par, 65 , and were tied with one other group, but they won the tiebreaker to take second. With a sunny day in the 70 's, the "Scramble 2 Vegas" was a fun afternoon for all.
