On Friday September 29, 43 golfers gathered at The Pines Golf Course on beautiful Lake Isabella . Throughout the day teams battled each other, the weather and the pine trees in what would turn out to be a great finish. After 18 holes, Doug Richley & Larry Lynch (2005 Student Champions) found themselves atop the leader board again this year with a score of 66. Following closely behind was Ryan Wright & Aaron Vigneault with a 69 and several other teams shot a 70. In the open division, Tim Otteman and Rob Burgan secured the Open division championship with a score of 70 while holding off the team of Walter Schneider and James Hill, who shot a 72.
The real excitement began when it was discovered that there was a tie in the Red Bull Final Five. The team of Doug Richley and Larry Lynch found themselves tied with Mac Horvath and Dave Fisher at -4. Richley/Lynch's tee shot ended up in the rough while Horvath/Fisher's tee shot ended up in the middle of the fairway. Both teams second shots found the green but Richley/Lynch had a tough down hill putt about 30 feet from the hole, which they 2 putted. Horvath/Fisher shot ended up about 15 feet from the hole. After watching his partner's putt come up short, Dave Fisher stepped up and nailed the putt to win the Red Bull Final 5!! |

The first of twenty- two teams teed off at 12:00 p.m. at the D. Fairfield Wheeler Golf course in Fairfield, Connecticut. With expectations high and a very competitive playing field, the lead changed hands several times throughout the afternoon.
At the end of the day, it was AJ Restaino and Pat Scanlan, who are currently juniors at Fairfield University, reclaiming the championship with a 4 under par 67. The pair won the 2004 event as freshmen and will be returning to Las Vegas to represent Fairfield University in the CGA's National Collegiate Golf Championship at the Badlands Golf Club.
Runners up at the Fairfield event were juniors Chris Andrews and Geoffrey Griffin. 3 rd place went to FU freshmen Matt Holmes and Sean Deale.
The tournament was sponsored by various companies such as: Blockbuster
Video, SportsCenter of Shelton, and What's Cooking in Fairfield. Each

Summary
Baltimore, MD – October 7 th started out like any other morning. The sun came up, the dew was fresh, and the clouds were gorgeous. Unfortunately, Mother Nature decided to alter her plans severely. Despite temperatures in the 40's, heavy winds, and pounding rains, 36 golfers competed in Loyola College's CGA Qualifying Event on Saturday, a day that no one will forget. At times, the mighty Longview Golf Course played like a miniature golf course, complete with puddles on the greens and a man named Oscar daring you to pay the all-day rate of $6 before 4pm. He once played 12 times, he brags, before the putter became too much to handle. Regardless, the Alumni team of Eamonn Golden and Dan McCartin fired a 1-over par 71 to take home the coveted title. Fellow alumni, Pierre Walden and Kevin Doyle, went on a “birdie flurry” down the stretch to wrap up a second place finish with a 72. The team comprised of Tournament Director and rhombus enthusiast Eric Eckenrode and Jeff Eckenrode limped to a 3-over par 73 and third place honors. We're still awaiting word from Jeff's beard regarding the loss. On the student side, Brian Holland and “Smooth” Chris Bedard fired a 3-over par 73 to take home top honors. Ken Schulz and Paul Herrmann, who drove 3 hours from Rutgers to participate, took home 2 nd place with a 5-over 75. Loyola favorites, Matt Andrews and Paul Kremer took home 3 rd place honors with a 5-over 75, losing to Ken & Paul on a match of cards. Afterwards, Andrews said, “I think I was a bit too tall today. The height discrepancy between my partner and I was too much to overcome down the stretch.”
Outdoor favorites Alan Baker and Geoff Norbert battled to a 12-over par 82 and were very pleased. Former lumberjack Baker was impressive in the tournament, frequently using matchsticks as tees on the par 3's. He said, “Try to see it once my way, everything zen, everything zen, I don't think so.” Norbert added, “When I go to the zoo, I love to look at the zebras. Yikes, stripes, fruit stripes gum.” Staff favorites Grady Sheffield and Andrew Kuhn struggled to a 10-over par 80. Neither were pleased afterward and Sheffield was overheard saying, “I hate the rain, but I do love steak fries.” I hear you Grady, I certainly do. |

Winners of Southern Miss Comcast Golf Classic Advance to Las Vegas Championship Hattiesburg, Miss. —The Southern Miss Comcast Golf Classic was again the premier golf event of the season as the Division of Student Affairs, students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends came together on Saturday, October 7, 2006, to recognize and support a variety of Southern Miss scholarships. Prior to tee time, each team of golfers designated a particular scholarship program within Student Affairs that would benefit from their play.
The three Championship flight division winners have advanced to the national championships to be held November 10-13, 2006, at the Badlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada. The three division categories included Student/Student, Faculty/Staff, and Alumni/Community, and the winners in each division were Shea Magee and Dane Reiter, Dave Beckett and Kerry Geroux, and Justin Cockrell and Dave Melancon, respectively.
There was also a second flight with the same divisions named the Joe Paul flight. The winners of the three divisions of the Joe Paul flight were Britt Walker and John Richards, Robert Hedgepeth and Lance Blackwell, and Jerry Pierce and Don Oberhelman, respectively.
The two-person scramble began with lunch and then a shotgun start at 12:45 p.m. at the championship Canebrake Golf Course, rated no. 3 in the state by Golf Digest . “This year's tournament field was the largest we've had with 120 players,” stated Dr. Paul, vice president of student affairs at The University of Southern Mississippi. “The proceeds will be able to fund nearly 30 student scholarships and stipends.”
Chris McGee, assistant director of Recreational Sports at Southern Miss, said, “Sponsorship has risen from 42 sponsors last year to 60 for the 2006 Classic. Also, having Comcast as the title sponsor allows for more proceeds from the tournament to go towards student scholarships and stipends.” |

Summary
Photos On October 8, West Virginia University held its local qualifier for the Collegiate Golf Alliance's National Collegiate Golf Championships. It was a perfect day for golf, with unseasonably warm temperatures and sunny skies. Soggy course conditions, however, made for a difficult scoring day. A difficult day, that is, for all but one team.
The two-man squad of Scott Dobak and Chris Sutton blistered Lakeview Resort's challenging Mountainview Course for an 8-under-par 64. Four birdies and an eagle fueled a 6-under-par front side, and they added two more birdies on the back nine en route to their 5-stroke victory. Dobak and Sutton will move on to Las Vegas to compete in the National Collegiate Golf Championship in November.
Two other under-par scores were registered, with Matt D'Angelo and Chris Mitchell's 69 taking second place. Before the last group of the day came in, there was a three-way tie for third place at 72. Jamon Wolfe and Matt Justice, however, broke that tie by shooting a 1-under 71 to capture third place.
After struggling for most of the round, a Miami University (Ohio) duo took full advantage of the opportunity presented by the Red Bull Final 5. John McCarthy and Brad Rhodus blew away the competition by carding four birdies in the final five holes to win the Red Bull Final 5 Competition.
The WVU Golf Club would like to thank the Collegiate Golf Association, Lakeview Resort and Mountainview Golf Course, the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. We would also like to extend our special gratitude to Red Bull. Their outstanding involvement and support helped make the tournament a great success. |
